wont read games at all.
only played one song off a cd and then would not play again

It sounds like you are suffering from a dirty lens. If the console will boot to the home screen (all the squares and stuff) then you should give a lens cleaning a try. This guide should help you out, although I would use a different lens cleaner than rubbing alcohol. Ronsonol Lighter Fluid or lense cleaner should do the trick.
