iPhone 6 Touch ID Issue after Screen Replacement

So I replaced the screen with a part off eBay and followed ifixit to the letter. I have also transferred the metal contact plate from the frame.

The home button feature of the iPhone works fine, however the Touch ID function doesn't work at all, and when trying to set up just says failed try again. I have tried a hard reset.

Having looked around there are suggestions to replace the extension cable, however I do not see how this can work as the home button function still works.

I was extremely careful when removing the home button and don't think I damaged it at all, any advice? Something I might have missed?

Many thanks

The extension cable may be damaged. This can happen especially when you lift up the sticky part at the bottom of the extension cable, where the home button plugs on top of.

I'll try replacing that - surely however as the clicking function of the home button works Touch ID should work? Or is that not quite how it functions

There is a big number of traces passing through the Touch ID cable, then through the extension to the board. So some traces / pathway might be missing and some still there.

You may need to reseat the cables on the screen and on the board.

If not, the Touch ID cable itself may be damaged (optimistically: sometimes fixable), its connector (that part is fixable), the extension cable (replaceable), or the connector or some components on the board (fixable).

Thanks very much for that! I'll give the extension cable a replacement try first as that seems to be the most common answer around.

If that doesn't work, what's the process for fixing the Touch ID connector(hopefully it's just the extension cable)

I noticed when I the phone has gone into lock for a while, clicking the home button doesn't do anything until I wake it with the lock button. Does this sound more like the extension cable not working?

by

Can't really tell. I've had a partially cut home button cable do that.

Not sure. Fixing means soldering or jumping missing lines. For that you will need micro soldering tools and skill. If I were you I'd just install a new button and loose the Touch ID advantage, as the repair cost may be high. But it's only my opinion. If you must fix it, you can send it to a micro soldering tech to have a look at it and assess the damage and advise you if fixable. Good luck, hope it's just the extension cable.

It was in fact just the extension cable. Amazing how such a little thing can cause so many problems!

Lewis did you use the original home button or a new on?

Most likely the original home button. He wants the touchID / fingerprint scanner functionality.

It was the original home button
