How about going with an ExpressCard/34 adapter? The trick is finding one that will work with Mac OS-X and has the right drivers for the OS-X the system has.

Here is a dual FireWire 800 card: Sonnet FireWire 800 ExpressCard/34

And a dual USB 3.0 port card: StarTech USB 3.0 ExpressCard/34

You can use adapters such as a thunderbolt to Firewire adapter: http://www.apple.com/shop/product/MD464L...

Wished it did would work for me

There are USB to Firewire 400 adapters. You could then use a firewire 400 to 800 adapter or cable.
