@lsufands should be pretty straight forward. If you can tell us what model your computer is we can be more specific about how to change the HDD

Hi, Back up your old hard drive while you can, before it dies completely, so that you have saved all your data!

Note that when you replace the hard drive, you will need to install the operating system on there again. Some laptops come with a recovery disk that come with a factory image. The factory image usually contains a pre-activated windows operating system for your laptop. That is all set up and ready to go once you've used the recovery installation media.

Some laptops are harder to take out the hard drive. By this I mean the ones that aren't easily user replaceable that require them to take out the whole bottom cover.

I did forget to mention it's a desktop tower. HP Pavillion if that makes it easier. There is a place here in Denham Springs that they say will charge $189 to replace it.

The way I handle this type of problem is to clone the dying hard drive to an external disk using clonezilla:

http://clonezilla.org/clonezilla-live.ph...

This creates a complete block level copy to the external disk. Test booting to the cloned external disk and verify it works correctly. If it looks good replace the bad drive with the new drive and you're up and running.

Assuming your computer is fairly recent it will use SATA disks, something like this external bay should work: http://www.amazon.com/Plugable-Lay-Flat-...

and purchase a hard drive of atleast the same size if not larger than your current drive.
