For most generations you can do the following:

1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off (slide it to HOLD and then back again).

2. Press and hold Menu and the Center button for at least 6 seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

If you have the newest iPod Nano (6th Generation), it's different:

1. Press the Sleep/Wake button and the Volume Down button for 6 seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
