Stuck on the display screen is a tick & Ok to disconnect

After recharging the unit, the screen shows a tick in the centre and the text 'Ok to disconnect" none of the options on the wheel remove it and when I plug into the computer I receive the iPod message in recovery mode.

What does this mean and how can I fix it?

Try this

To reset your iPod with a click wheel, follow these steps:

Slide the Hold switch to the locked position and then slide it to unlocked again.

Press and hold the Menu and Center (or Select) buttons together until you see the Apple logo (about six to eight seconds). You might need to repeat this step.
