OK so I am looking to buy one of these but the only thing holding me back is will the onscreen keyboard show up if the keyboard is folded up and still connected behind the iPad like if you are standing up or something?

So... Got to go to an Apple Store... And the onscreen keyboard does show up when the keyboard is not in the "prime" typing position (like in the Picture) so...

It does not show or function unless it is in the typing position as you noticed. In fact, it can be hard to get it functional some time as it is also that the hinge is seated properly in the "groove" on the keyboard; this can be an issue with some styles of cases (the opposite issue to the one you are asking)a.
