Is the Hold button select?

Hi, I have an 1st generation ipod that I have had for years but only just got hold of a firewire cable to charge it up, It all seems fine, But the only way I can select anything is by using the hold button?, Is this right?, Is the centre circle of the disc a button?, It doesn't seem to click like the others around it?, Many thanks.

Options

timbennett40 the center button is the "Select" button. Use iPod’s buttons and scroll wheel to navigate through iPod’s onscreen menus.To select a menu item, use the scroll wheel to scroll to the item, then press the Select button (in the center of iPod). The Select button should feel the same as the rest. You may have to disassemble it and clean it

Like I say the middle button doesn't select anything but if I slide the hold button on and off THAT SELECTS?...
