I need to replace a cracked screen on a Iphone 6. I have been told that if the phone detects a aftermarket home button it will give error 53. If I replace the screen and keep the original home key will I avoid error 53?

You are okay to replace just the screen, you are also okay to replace the home button (if you need to, if it isn't broken - don't fix it!)
If you restore/update the phone with the replaced button you will get error 53
You are fine to replace just the screen but be careful not to damage the home button flex/extender.
