How does backwards compatibility work from 60 gb to 40 gb units?

My 60gb PS3 lost a control board connector and after a power failure will not turn on anymore. I was only able to purchase a 40gb FAT model and was wondering where the backwards compatibility came from. Is it a chip on the motherboard or software in the hard drive? Because i was just gonna swap hard drives if that were the case? I'm good with this stuff but i have a lot of grey areas. Someone please help!!!

The backward compatibility is on the motherboard chip set. You can put whatever size hard drive you want (that is compatible) in the system and it will not change the backward compatibility...
