Why is the internal microphone not picking up sound?

My canon t4i internal microphone is not picking up sound, when I play back videos it just sounds like a faint wind. I tried adjusting the audio levels in manual and nothing works. Do I have to go to a repair place?

Options

The two mics are on the top of the flash area. Make sure they aren't cover or filled with debris.

To be honest, they are terrible mics any way. A hot shoe mounted shotgun mic would be great.
