@hkerry could be a bad speaker, bad connection or a stuck headphone jack. It will help if you can tell us what model your tablet is. At first I would try to clean the headphone jack. Insert and extract the headphones a couple of time in rapid succession, use a few puffs of compressed air to blow in it.

sound ONLY works with headphone plugged into unit - RCA PRO12 2-in-1 for android. Unit is less than 2 months old.
@harriet1986 besides trying what I posted in the original answer, I would contact whomever you purchased this from. Since it is only a couple of month old you should address any warranty issues first.
