Can I reuse an Office license key if not uninstalled?

I purchased a new laptop 2 weeks ago and installed MS Office 2016. There were major problems with the laptop itself, so I returned it to the shop and have been given an alternative laptop. My problem is trying to reuse my 2 week old copy of Office 2016. I have been able to reinstall it, but am not allowed to reuse the key because it is considered to be already in use. Any ideas how to resolve this, given that I no longer have the other laptop.

Many thanks in advance for ideas as to how to resolve this.
