I have no sound from the top or bottom plug

every thing seems like it should be working normal. all controls work ,the songs look like they are progressing,the volume indicator moves up and down when the control is pushed.But no sound comes out.I took it to apple and the don't know what is wrong.And they said they don't take them apart
