home button connects to the top of dock connector. proximity should be ok. try opening the front display using ifixit guide, check the prongs under the home button are undamaged-should be up slightly, if not try lifting them up very gently. clean the top of dock connector. the home button gets a lot of dirt round it and under it!

Im having sort of the same problem. I dissassembled my iphone and when i put it back together it works fine but my power button is a little further in. Ity works but i have to apply a little more pressure than usual and it does spring back up but barely. Also, my home button does not respond unless i press it real hard or i hold down on the left side of it and then press the button.

try checking the home button as above. the power button is tricky devil to seat properly. you'll have to take it back out and just check you've put the right screws in (made that mistake) and that it's screwed in to the right place (ditto to that mistake) also check that the silver metal ring is hanging down. it really is trial and error. if you can still get it to work then sometimes its easier just to leave as is.
