My 80gb series 5 classic is dead no display, no disk running noises. It’s mounted permanently on an Apple connector/ stand. The Apple power supply is permanently connected to the (230 vac U.K.) power supply. Are you saying that an expired battery will - prevent charging, prevent connection to iTunes, prevent manual resetting?

Most likely the battery. I just did one of these. Pretty simple to solder the new battery on

Here's the relevant battery replacement guide! The hardest part is prying the case open, you'll need prying tools and patience. And you don't need to solder at all =)
