My display is on but black and my digitizer works

First thing's first this is actually for the 2nd Gen moto E but the parts are pretty much them same, right? Just a spec upgrade as far as I know.

Anyway, a couple days ago my screen started flickering. Stayed on but showed black. No real problem just a minor .35 second inconvenience. Then the off period started to grow and I tried troubleshooting (Turning on the option to only draw using GPU, uninstalling Twilight (F.Lux for Android aka Screen Overlay software), and even factory resetting my phone. The flickering didn't halt. It grew worse and now my display only sometimes (and completely randomly) comes on for a split second every half hour or so. It's still completely usable using MoboMarket because the Digitizer is still intact. My screen is fine. The phone is 2 months old but wasn't covered under warranty (because it was "used" but I got it and it's actually new or refurbished. Maybe 3rd party refurbished though but still not covered).

Could this be as simple as opening the phone up and reattaching the ribbon for the display? Is that a thing for phones? This isn't my first DIY but it would be an investment in the tools to open the phone up and I don't want to waste money if that might not be the case.

It is a thing. I've spent a large amount of time confirming that this is, indeed, a thing.
