Optical drive on MBP will not recognize cds but will recognize dvds?

Hi. I have a optical drive in a MBP A1150 that will recognize and play dvds, both blank and "with content", but the drive will not recognize any form of cd, blank or "with content". The OS is 10.5.8 and the machine has been fully updated. Can the lack of cd recognition be a software problem or an internal mechanical problem to the drive? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The first thing I'd try is a lens cleaning DVD. These cost less then a replacement drive and may solve the issue. However, if the issue is a bad laser then you have to replace the whole DVD drive. Here is the guide on replacing the DVD drive.

The part is a 12.7mm IDE slot load drive, if you cannot find the official Apple part. I would suggest getting the Apple official drive if you can, because iDVD may not work, depending on how old the version is. If you do not care about iDVD, I'd suggest doing this. The prices are a lot more agreeable on the non Apple drives.

If you need iDVD, you can find the Apple drive from iFixit and other places that sell secondhand Apple parts.
