Picture distortion and blank with vertical lines

What causes my tv to work just fine then the picture becomes distortive and eventually blanks out to vertical lines. Sound stays ok. Sometimes you can turn it off , wait a bit , turn it back on and you have a great picture for a while, but sometimes that doesn't work. You just get a blank picture with vertical lines. Forgot to mention it is about 9 yrs old and is it worth putting money into it? And I am on Dish and the receiver seems not to be the problem. Model# LN-S3241D

Ronald Knipp going by your description alone it sounds like a bad T-con board. Of course this answer could change once you let us know exactly what model your TV is and post some images of what your screen looks like with your question. To do that, follow this guide.

Update (11/12/2015)

Thank you for adding the images. Yes it sure does look like a bad T-con board, but there is always a chance it's the LCD. The board is a V320B1-L01-C and can be had for around $30 on online auctions. It is cheaper than buying a new TV and most definitely cheaper than a new LCD (almost impossible to find) So, the decision is your about repair or replacement:-)it's a ~$30 gamble

Thankyou for your help. Is this something I could replace myself or do I need a TV repairman?
