While not often used, you can create multiple partitions under OS-X on your current HD. Then prep each partition with a different version of OS-X.

You will need to backup and restore your current partitions data once the partitions are created again. You'll need to delete the current partition and create new partitions. You'll also want to have a large enough drive to support all of these partitions, your current drive ever may not be large enough.

What you'll then do is leverage the boot manager by holding down the Option key when you restart your system to select the given partition you want to use.

Our test system has four partitions to test out application issues for the OS's we support. It's an older non-retina system with a 2TB drive.

I don't see why I won't work. However, keep in mind that the system might be very slow or unresponsive if you boot from a external drive through USB 2.0. You should consider replacing your optical disc drive for a hard drive, this way you could use the SATA port.

I would add here going with a FireWire external would be much faster than the USB 2 port.

I was going to mention it but it is very hard nowadays to find external storage with FireWire.

While many brick&morter stores have stopped stocking them on the shelf. You can get quite a few online. Here's one source we use: OWC FireWire External drives
