My headphones work but they don't get any sound when plugged into the tablet. I have tried restarting and holding the volume button (as recommended in another post) but didn't work.
It appears the headphone piece that goes into the jack does not go in the jack all the way but not sure if that is the problem or not.
any ideas?

Jeff Morehouse, "does not go in the jack all the way" could most certainly be a big issue. Make sure that there is nothing stuck inside the audio jack. If the connector does not fit all the way, It may not make proper contact or close the switch signaling the system that headphones are attached.
