Why is the view finder function of my LCD not working

I purchased a PowerShot SX 160 IS about a year ago - here are the symptoms: The LCD display works - however it does not act as a view finder. I cannot see the image I'm trying to shoot. When I turn on camera the LCD defaults to "Date/Time" screen. I repeatedly set the date / time, etc. When I turn off camera, the info is lost - date / time is all reset to "0". Leaving date / time screen and pushing "menu" LCD screen is grainy. When pushing "dis" button the typical selections appear, I believe. Scrolling to the "tools" tab, I see "mute" with on/off selections. I am able to make selections and changes I make remain when I turn camer off and then back on. When I take a shot the image is completely black. I have removed and replaced the "AA" batteries and memory card. No change

Ok - I'm not sure this will help, because I tried what I'm about to describe several times prior to posting my original query. Nonetheless - I followed the IFIXIT link to the postings on LCD display. One mentioned camera reboot...essentially turn off then turn on the camera...(which I had done multiple times, of course). In addition to turn off /on, I also hit "menu" to skip the date/time menu that I can't seem to get rid of. I hit / held "menu" for about 1-2 seconds and voila!!! it worked!! Not very scientific...and YES I had done all of those steps over the past several days without being able to claim victory.

I am going to call the image / view finder problem closed. It still isn't working perfectly...something is still amiss, however, at least I can take pics of my pup. Closed for now!
