How to change keyboard to a backlight version

Bonjour!

I want to change my Keyboard because it's not illuminated (macbook late 2008) but I have some questions if you can answer:

  • Where can I buy the illuminated keyboard please ?
  • Moreover, do I have to order other pieces like motherboard or other component to make it work ?

Thanks in advance,

Pierre (from France)

I'm not sure its worth it.

Basically you'll need to find the backlit upper case (Apple P/N 661-4944). Here is the IFIXIT guide you'll need to follow: MacBook Unibody Model A1278 Upper Case Replacement. As you can see its a lot of work! And the part you want is hard to find and costly!

Are you sure you want to do this? Remember this system is on the older side, is it better to put the money into the cookie jar to put into a newer system (New or Used)?

Hi Dan,

Firstly, thanks for your helm.

In fact I already opened my MBP to change some components so I think I can put a backlight keyboard in without so much problems. I have seen your tuto also But before I had a MBP from 2009 with it but after sell it ans when I bought this "new" MBP from 2008 i didn't know that it doesn't have backlight keyboard :( so as i changed many components like harddisk or other, i don't want to buy a new computer even if I would like it but MBP are expansive...that's why I have modified mine...

To finish, before post my Question yesterday, i have seen that even if the backlight keyboard isn't on MBP late 2008, apprently Apple schedule adding of it due to the connectic available in. Do you know if it's true or not ?

Thanks

Just to be clear here you have a MacBook or do you have a MacBook Pro. How about giving us the last four digits of the serial number so we can verify what you have.

Depending on what model you have you may not be able to hook it up. It was only the 15" MacBook that had both keyboard offerings and you do need to the correct logic board that has the added connector.

Pierre, Most likely you will have to change the logic board as well. Your current one probably does not have the circuitry to support a backlit keyboard.

Ciao Old Turkey 03,

Firstly thanks for your help.

As I said to Dan previously:

Apparently Apple schedule adding of it due to the connectic available in. Do you know if it's true or not ? Thanks

The only way to find out for sure is by checking the logic board. If you have the 820-XXXX number we can probably find out.
