Death? No way. it's just a flesh wound. All minor stuff....fixit because it does have great audio (almost as good as the 3rd and the 5th gen;-)

rex, the red X is most commonly associated with a failed hard drive. There are some that suggest "slapping" the HDD a bit to loosen it up. This may work for a bit, but bottom line would be to change your hard drive. Here iPod 6th Generation are the guides.
