iPod Classic Not Synching With New iPad

My Classic was loaded with music from personal CDs and some iTunes selections. The Classic was synched with my old iMac, which eventually failed and has been destroyed. I have a new iPad with some recently purchased music from iTunes and the music that transitioned from the old iMac. However, when I tried to synch the old Classic with the new iPad the synch action was not activated. How do I synch the Classic with the new iPad and transfer everything that is on both systems. I have been advised that I will lose a great deal of the music that was loaded on the Classic from CDs loaded on to the iMac. Thanks
