Is it possible to use as an external monitor?

Hello everyone I wanted to ask if it were possible to use my early 2009 iMac (20-inch) as an external monitor for my laptop?

It has a mini-displayport on it so I was thinking I can use a minidisplayport to hdmi adapter and then just use a hdmi cable to connect from my laptop to the adapter. Would this work out? If it does, can someone give me a recommendation for an adapter to buy?

Thanks in advance.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Sorry you can't connect to the iMac via the miniDisplay port to your windows PC to use it as a display the port is designed to send the signal out not receive it.

In a way you can. You'll need to hookup the systems via an Ethernet network.

Its called screen sharing: OS X Yosemite: Share the screen of another Mac Will that do it here?

That would have worked out great if my system was also a mac, but I forgot to mention that it is instead a windows system laptop, windows 10 to be exact. Anyway I can do that with a windows system?

Sorry Derick I just don't know of any way here working with a Windows PC as the master system with a iMac as the slave to use as a display. Maybe someone else can offer a solution.
