Washer stops mid wash cycle! HELP!

So my washer isn't in the best shape. I was just reading yesterday about replacing hoses and doing its yearly maintenance and what not and I put a load in and bam it stops working. It went through half of the wash cycle and then stops right when it gets out of the gray labeled area that says Heavy - Short. Then I moved it to rinse and it turned back on and it stops mid rinse cycle as well. So pretty much it's stuck with a bunch of water in it and I don't know what to do. I'm 20 years old and broke. I have just enough money to pay my rent and bills and thats that. And when it comes to fixing things I'm willing to try but a lot of the time I have no idea what half the things are I'm suppose to do and my boyfriend just gets mad and freaks out. Like when he found out this happen his response was "great now we need a new washer" so please someone tell me that this isn't that big of a deal and it's can be fixed.
