After trying to sync my ipod, all music gets erased on ipod. iTunes is fine. iPod will sync correctly after using ipod buttons to reset. ipod is a 80G classic. Running Windows XP on a PC. What can I do to fix this?

does the problem always occur when you try to sync the ipod?

i guess you are using the "automatic sync" feature from itunes. the problem with this feature is, that if the music is not longer in the itunes library - it will delete the music that you already have on your ipod- i always handle my files manually and never had any issues with my different ipod's.

you can simply drag and drop the files (you want to have on the ipod) on the ipod symbol in itunes. it's easier to handle - even if it's not automated

i understand that - i'm a little "oldschool" - i had my first own computer in '81 - and i can't stand those (sometimes) crappy sync stuff that almost every manufacturer of cell phones or multimedia devices comes up with. nokia had a great backup tool - now it's crippled into some sort of brainless "sync tool" that doesn't understand that my phone is mine and the other 2 nokias in the household don't need to be synced with my phonebook, pictures and so on - i "synced" my apple tv once: took ages, didn't work correctly and since then - my atv get's his food from winscp.
