On startup my mail freezes. It also takes forever to load my most recent mail. Forever as in a couple hours. Today 8/13/15 but I only have mail from 8/01/15.

I assume you are not downloading from the mail server here just opening up the app and looking at the locally stored messages. If that is the case, your HD needs service ASAP.
First I would make a good backup of all of your stuff. Then you'll need to try to clean out some of your old stuff try to clear out at least 1/4 to 1/3 of the disk. You will likely want to clean out the old log and cache files using a cleaner app like Disk Doctor off of the App Store.
Next, bootup your system on an external bootable drive and run Disk Utility repair the permissions and disk. The last step here is to run a drive defrag'er Drive Genius is a good one.
You might find the drive is not repairable at which point it's time for a new HD.
