Why can't I reboot my phone?

I have a sony Xperia. I heard a notification so I picked up the phone to check it and it wouldn't open. Black screen, nothing. I tried holding the power and volume up button at the same time and still nothing! I even tried calling it. No ring & still no screen. Any other suggestions?
