Which brand of HDD in my iMac?

I wanted to change my HDD because it broke down. It is my secundary HDD, my primary HDD from which I startup is a SSD.

After I changed the HDD for a new one, the iMac didn't see the new HDD. The HDD who was installed was a SAMSUNG HD103SJ, the new one was a Western Digital.

My question is, can I replace the old HDD only which a HDD from the same brand.

Yes, you can use another manufactures! But you do need to use the correct thermal sensor cable:

  • 922-9215 - Hitachi
  • 922-9216 - Seagate
  • 922-9622 - Western Digital

But given what you state here I think you have a bad drive or SATA cable as the sensor would only effect the fan not booting up or prepping the drive.

How about getting the universal SATA to USB adapter cable so you can prep the HD externally first, then install it.
