Replacing logic board: CPU Upgrade?

I have a late 2009 iMac (EMC 2308) with 3.06GHz CPU and the upgraded ATI 4670 video card. It's been locking up for a few weeks and after lots of troubleshooting and diagnostics, I'm to the point that I believe the logic board is going to have to be replaced. But I'm going to take it to Apple to see what they say.

My question is: does the logic board have to be replaced with the same part? If Apple confirms the logic board needs to be replaced and they are going to charge me arm + leg to replace it, I would just do it myself. But if I am replacing the entire logic board (PN 661-5307), can I upgrade to the 3.33GHz part (PN 661-5420) at the same time? Or will this create other problems with the existing hardware in the 3.06GHz model?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

"locking up" is the only symptom you have given. Just not enough to make a diagnosis with.

Thanks, but I am not asking for a diagnosis. I am asking about upgrading the CPU during a logic board replacement.

Steve Brown, yes both logic boards are compatible with your system. The 661-5420 is for the model with the discrete ATI video card which you already have. so there should be no issues with that.
