Getting Gas in oil.

I have a Craftsman mower with a 16hp Kohler motor. It is getting gas in the oil. Any ideas on where to start looking ?

test the compression should be in the 70 to 75lb range . anything lower and you have a bypass issue and this could be your entry point any gas left unburnt in a cylinder will leak into the crank case or you could have bad valve guides which is another place gas can enter. How old is the motor and does it burn oil , is it hard to start. What do the plugs say , pull the plug and compare what your looks like to what chart says

It's 16 years old. Doesn't smoke & run greats, Starts really easy. Thanks for the ideas, will start checking it out

Seems this is a common problem with these and it has to do with the solenoid located in the carb. That solenoid is supposed to shut the fuel flow off when the ignition is turned off but they apparently malfunction leaving the fuel open, filling fuel bowl, then draining into crankcase. The best solution to date is to place a fuel shut off valve in the fuel line then before starting the unit turn the fuel selector on, when you are finished using the tractor simply turn the fuel selector off. Its a hassle sure, but a helluva lot better than having to drain the oil fuel and then refill with oil.
