Playstation won't show video/sound and won't turn off

Okay so I got my play station 3 a few months ago and nothing has gone wrong until now. I started it up as normal and went to play the game disc I inserted but once it went off the main menu nothing else showed up and my system won't turn off. I've waited to see if it would turn off on it's own after a while like it normally does but no such luck. Every time I try to turn it off by the power button it beeps and doesn't do anything. The green light is still showing, nothing appears to be out of the ordinary apart from no video/sound and the system is not responding to a controller. What's wrong and how can I fix this? Would it be safe to just unplug it from my tv and plug it back in?
