Can I update the Harddrive and ram
I have an older Mac mini that was given to me, can I update the hardDrive and Ram , or buy a new machine?

You can to a limit. This model of mac will only except 1 GB max of ram. If your looking for more then that then you should look into a new machine

As for the HD - This model uses an older spec'ed drive called Ultra ATA/100 (PATA). They are getting hard to find as they are no longer being made. Your choices of size will be limited
