What wire colors are in the TRRS 3.5mm jack?

I am trying to replace the jack on my headset. When I strip the cable down there are a black, blue, red, and white with a copper shield around it. I have the plug but I need to know which wires are for left speaker, right speaker, microphone, and ground. What do I connect the copper shielding to?

Just test resistance between wires, the speakers are usually between 80 ohms and the mic is around 1k ohm and apply very light current to determine which is left and which is right channel.

jonathangavin, the common assignment for the TRRS connector are

Tip - left audio

Ring 1 (closest to tip) - right audio

Ring 2 - ground

Sleeve – microphone

Now there are two standards that are being used for the TRRS connector CTIA and OMTB, the only difference is the that ground and mic are reversed. So you may have to experiment a bit.

To check which wire belongs to what speaker, use a 9v battery and connect the copper to ground (-) (you can also assume the white is ground as well)and briefly touch the other wire to the positive contact. You should here your speaker "pop" that will identify which side it is. Once you identify the speakers, you know that the rest is microphone.

I tried to trace them back by taking the headset completely apart and the closest I can make out is:

Blue - left

Red - right

Black - ground

White - mic

copper - (Do I add this with the black? I'm assuming the black is the speaker ground and the copper is the mike ground?)

What other wires to have on each individual speaker? i.e. Blue and what else? the black and white is what I am not convinced about. What happens when you connect white to - on a battery and tap blue to positive? Do you hear the speaker pop?

The left speaker has a blue and black wire, the right speaker has a red and black wire, and the mic has a white and copper. In the same tutorial there is a replacing the mic section and here is a pic of the mic terminals:

Perfect. so white and copper are mic. This way you also know that copper is ground.

That was it. For anyone else that needs to know, here is the breakdown:

Tip - blue (left speaker)

1st ring - red (right speaker)

2nd ring - black and copper shield (ground)

Shield - white (microphone)

For my Philips earphones with mic, this worked:

Tip - blue (microphone)

1st ring - red (right speaker)

2nd ring - coppers (ground)

Shield - black (left speaker)

I believe colors differ between makes.

I have 4 colours in the earphne blue red green n copper wire n 4 slots in the mic mentioned as M,R,L,e ..now where do I stick which colour

Well, my guess is the copper and silver should be the ground, and the red should be the Mic, im not sure though, still figuring this one out sadly to say

For my logitech mic headset, the TRRS scheme seems to be Tip - connects to the bottom lowest contact pin of the connector, Ring 1 - connects to the second lowest contact pin, Ring 2 - third contact from the bottom, Sleeve - highest contact on the top.

The cable itself has 4 conductor wires: bare copper, blue, red, and white with a copper sleeve around it.

Using a multimeter set to 200ohms, I found that by wearing the headset and connecting the bare copper to blue makes a popping sound in the right earcup of the headset. Connecting the bare copper and red together makes the left earcup pop. This means the bare copper wire is ground. The Red wire then, is the left channel, and Blue is the right channel and are each connected to the ground copper wire, “upstream” on the headset end at the speaker drivers.

White is the mic and it’s copper sleeve around it is the mic ground.

Now that I know where the TRRS connect to on the different pins of the connector itself, and I know which wires connect with which channel on the headset, I have to figure out the wiring scheme.

I know there are CTIA and OMTP wiring standards. In both diagrams, the Tip should go with the Left channel, Ring 1 with Right channel.

But the Mic and Ground pins differ in location depending on the wiring scheme. I’ll have to look up the diagrams and just try each one out to see which works with my mic cause Idk where my ground and mic wires go.

Ok guys, ready for a head scratcher. I'm trying to repair my earbuds with mic headset, I'm trying to use an already spliced open trrs plug and wire that i know works, the plug and wire were part of a mono(one ear) with mic headset, it came with my ps4 and is the same one that comes with the psp & vita. Ive had 2 ps4 "lvl 1 pnp" headsets, one from Afterglow and one from Onn, they both broke, in different spots. The Afterglows wiring broke at the usual place, where the plug and wire connect. The Onn I'm not sure but its between the speaker/mic or the mute/volume control. Now the earbud/mic headset broke or inside the back of the speaker, I used to be able to take the skinny, tiny wire and wrap it around the outside of the single earbud worked great till the inevitable happened. Then bought a PS4 lvl 1 pnp Afterglow mono head set. Worked great till the plug/wire connection failed, lastly i got some earbuds w/mic headset forgot the brand but have great sound, mic isn't flat nor overpowering, but they broke at the plug/wire connection too. I had a few years ago fixed the Afterglow Lvl 1 with the plug/wire connection from the mono earbud headset, I guess I was lucky because the wires were the exact same on both sets of wires, these worked great until a moth ago. My kids are social distance learning and my 2 oldest started wanting to play on my ps4 not their Xbox, they wanted to use my hardware(headphones, eyetoy camera, etc. .. somehow the wire is tearing apart right where it comes out of the speaker, the earphone stopped working, you can see wires exposed and broken and all but 1/8 of the plastic around all of it is seperated, so really bad spot, being obviously yanked, tugged & pulled on, the wires have been stretched and torn apart so even if I manage to soilder the wires back together there still probably weekend in many other spots now. So I opened up the old spliced point and separated them, as I went to connect the earbuds, now the earbuds were actually really easy to cut the cord and strip it back enough, the jack/tips rubber outer cover was easy to remove the inner black heat wrap was a little hard but not really, and in stripping it down i could tell why these failed, only the last spot(ground) was still soilder, everything else failed. Now the wires in the earbud is i guess the most common set of colors. Blue, Green. Red & Copper. So after all the things I've read and watched about fixing ear/headphones I pretty sure I know which wire goes where, Now here's where im lost/dumbfounded. The wires from the ps4 earbud and the Afterglow lvl 1 headsets are the same colors; red, red & copper stripped, copper and lastly a white plastic sheath with wires inside is the last wire. All the sets have four wires so should be too hard to figure out. But I havent been able to get the wires right. I have been all over the web looking for and I can't find anything about these wire's colors. So I'd love to know what these colors go to.

When repairing headsets, never trust the colour codes, or that the colours will be the same on different headsets, microphones, or left/right speakers.

get a volt/ohm multimeter and buzz the wires out to verify their function.

the two speakers will likely have a very similar ohm reading, and you will likely hear a click in each speaker as test them. If you don’t, connect up a single 1.5 volt cell to the speaker wires one at a time and you will hear a small click in eight head phone speaker. You may also hear a click in the microphone, depending on its type, dynamic, capacitive, or electret.

Once again, the ohms reading for the speakers will be very similar, and the ohms reading for the microphone will be different than the speakers, and likely much higher.

when soldering the wires together, make sure you heat the wire and apply solder to it, before attaching it to the other wires, in order to burn/melt the shellac insulation from the tip of the wire, or you will never get it to take solder, tin, and attach to the other wire you are attempting to splice together.

I have a radio for referees and I want to use a better headpiece but the wiring is different from the original product. The radio has a 3,5mm trrs plug , stereo and mic. The problem is they charge the radio from a 3.5mm trrs plug that plugs into a USB port. I need a way to find which pin is ground , left, right and mic.

I am guessing they use the tip as ground and the sleeve as mic and the charge circuit. rings left and right. I don't want to cut the earpiece up though.

Any help for a wiring diagram of this. The vnetphone v6 uses the same headpiece.
