How do I recover data from hard drive?

My MacBook has died. It's a white one which I bought in 2009. The sales assistant in the Apple Store tried to recover it but without any luck. I've got 15000 photos on the hard drive. He suggested I buy a caddy case, remove the hard drive from the Mac and try to transfer the photos to the new Mac I've bought. Anyone know how to do this and what caddy case I should buy?

Basically you'll take the drive out of your system following this IFIXIT guide: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2009 Hard Drive Replacement.

Then depending on the system you plan to buy you'll get an external case to hold the drive. As an example a USB 3 case like this one: OWC Express White
