Nikon coolpix 310L shutter release button is pressure operated plastic mechanical extension part that is located on the outside housing piece that can easily be removed. Most common malfunction is separation due to physical impact that bends the camera strap mount, and that lifts the shutter release button just enough not to let it function properly. In that case you just need to bend the camera strap mount back to shape, and everything should work fine. If closer inspection is needed, you need to unscrew the two screws nearest to the right camera strap mount (one that is closer to the back is to make things easier, the one to the front is the important one) and remove the whole plastic section that is beneath the shutter release. Once you do that, you should be able to see what's causing the problem easily.

Just bought a Coolpix L310 that had the same problem. Your instructions on how to open was perfect. When I opened the shutter button mount everything looked ok. I found the micro cable was loose. I replaced it to the mount (not easy with big hands) and now it works fine..
