I just had to replace the touchpad on an Asus U56E and I also can confirm that it is glued to the palm rest. I too removed it with a heat gun on low. I heated the plastic touchpad on the top of the palm rest (not the touchpad circuit board itself on the bottom of the palm rest) for about 5 min at about 300 degrees & then was able to get a *very* thin pry tool under the edge of the circuit board & just slid the tool all the way around the edge of the circuit board, then heated it again for several minutes & then finally very carefully pried it off with a plastic pry tool. Even though the adhesive on the bottom looks a little messed up after prying it off, the circuit board still worked fine when I installed it in another laptop & in my case I was even able to reuse the adhesive.
