What is the correct operating system

I have lost my operating system disk and I need to re-install it as I have bought a new hard drive.

What is the correct operating system ?

I bought 10.6.3 Snow Leopard from the Apple store.

But looking at the following link on the Apple support website:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203402

It says:

Do not attempt to use a Mac OS X v10.6.0 or v10.6.3 Snow Leopard Retail DVD.

So what should I be installing then ???

Is your old drive still working? If it is you can leverage it to boot up your system externally so you can prep your new drive and if you have the installer copied onto your drive use it to install the same OS you had.

If not you'll need to find a friend who will format and copy the OS installer Lion or newer onto a USB thumb drive. Then using Ito boot up your system you should be able to prep your new drive and install a fresh copy of OS-X onto it.

The old drive doesn't work at all.

I do have a backup Gdrive mobile hard drive though which I was using on my Imac.

Is it possible the OS installer was saved onto that ?

If so would it be possible to copy the OS installer onto a USB using my laptop ?

I don't know anyone with an imac of the same age..

Doesn't need to be the same age. Your system can support Yosemite if you want you can jump to the latest. The tricky part here is prepping the USB thumb drive as it needs to be bootable. If you have an Apple Store near you they maybe able to help you prep the thumb drive or even install the OS on your system for you. In any case if you don't have the OS installer you can download it from the App Store.
