How to replace Acer Aspire 3810tz CMOS battery

My clock keeps jumping an hour back and i was advised to replace the cmos battery.

I tried to open the laptop and find it, but it's not an easy dissasemble.

Can anyone advise on this machine? I attached a photo I found online - can you locate where the cmos battery is?

Don't know if you're able to further comment but if you know about CMOS perhaps you can give me a second opinion.. as in the original post the problem is just that the time in the CMOS setup jumps back an hour every so often. Consequently the time changes in Windows by an hour.

To restate the question slightly differently, I was wondering if there could way the time could be changing in the CMOS due to any reason OTHER than the CMOS battery? E.g. windows affecting the CMOS, somehow (?)

It might be the CMOS battery, but then the BIOS time should be wrong. It sounds more like you are just having a settings issue with your OS. What OS are you using? Have you set the correct time zone? What time zone are you in? See Time Zone - Change and ensure that you have checked the option Automatically adjust clock for Daylight Saving Time. If the automatic adjust for daylight savings is checked, uncheck it and see what happens. Also , disable time server sync and see if it helps.

my bad - by 'cmos setup' I meant 'bios'. The problem occurs in windows too, but I've tried everything I can think of - fiddling with the time zone (I'm in London and it's set to Dublin, Edinburgh, Lisbon, London, summer time). It's currently set to sync with time.windows.com and it's erratic - sometimes it self-corrects to the proper time (after the system's been on a while). At other times not. Hence, i'm never exactly sure what the time is.. (!)

I also tried advice that directed me to adjust settings in the services (some while ago). nothing seems to permananently fix it, but when I recently found it skips back an hour in the bios I concluded the cause was more at system level than within windows. Could be wrong of course.. just wanted to check if any possibility a wrong setting in windows could feed back to the bios somehow. But I believe not..

so the battery replacement is, I'm assuming the best way forward.

Tom, usually when it is a BIOS issue the times sets to either 12 or 00 and I have not seen anything that sets it an hour back. turn your time server sync off and see what happens.

Thanks, yes I don't recall if I tried this. Out of interest, are you aware of the possible reason the sync might cause the problem .. you'd reasonably think it it would regulate and correct any existing time issue.. right?

I believe that this is a settings issues (probably something connected to daylight savings time)
