What is the difference in the names like UJ-868 and UJ-875?

My macbook unibody (Late 2008) has a Matshita DVD UJ-868. I don't know what that means really. What is the difference between that and the 2010 models of macbooks and macbook pros? What are they called? and how much better are they compared to mine?

Try a Panasonic? Now there's a truly brilliant answer for you, since Matsushita and Panasonic are the same company...

A little late for this, but thought I would comment for anyone else like me who found this post during a web search.

They are problematic

If you can find a Panasonic use it instead.

  • UJ-875-A DVD Writer (Slim Slot)
  • UJ-875-B (Slim Slot)
  • UJ-880-A DVD Writer (Slim Slot)

The differences are:

  • DVD Read Speed
  • DVD Write Speed
  • DVD Rewrite Speed
  • CD Read Speed
  • CD Write Speed
  • CD Rewrite Speed
  • Type of Drive Media Supported e.g. DVD+R DL, DVD-R DL, CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD+R

You might think about putting in a Combo BluRay Drive.

Is there a list I can look at that shows all of the UJ-### and compare them? Also, since mine is a UJ-868, does that mean it is an older model than any other superdrive UJ-869 and above? i.e. UJ-875
