DS not connecting to donwload play or pictochat

I was at my friends house, there were another 5 people there, and we played DS because we haven't played in years. all of a sudden, we were playing Mario cart, then my DS wouldn't connect to anybody else's. we tried pictochat, and my ds wouldn't pick up any signal from download play or pictochat. any suggestions?
