SD Card reader stopped working after update to 10.10

The internal card reader of my iMac 27 Mid 2011 stopped functioning after upgrading to Yosemite.

System Report says there is no card reader in the system. Tried restarting, tried resetting NVRAM. No solution. Closest by Apple repair point is +1,000km away. What can I do?

Can you find a 3rd party USB plug-in card reader that will work instead.

I used the camera usb connection to import my pictures, so I'm not completely stucked. But tbh I'd rather have my built-in card reader working again somehow :-)

If you want to fix it you'll need to replace the SD board as I suspect the connector has been damaged some how. Here's the IFIXIT guide: SD Board Replacement.
