The older Core 2 Duo systems are no longer a supported platform from Apple or Microsoft. So getting drivers beyond what BootCamp 4 offers or running Window Vista (32bit) is as high as you can go as that was the supported config.
Yes, Windows 7 and even Windows 8 running in 32bit should work but the drivers offered by Microsoft in the newer OS's likely are not being tested on the older hardware.
There were reports of an audio driver issue in the older versions of BootCamp Windows drivers (which I believe it the same ones Microsoft offered in Windows 7).
I would recommend you try redoing your HD (or setup an external FireWire drive) with OS-X and then install BootCamp on it with Windows 7 to see if you get it working that way.
