Can I mix different size ram chips in the dual slots?

I have two 2 GB Ram chips in the two available slots. Do both slots have to be filled with the same size RAM chip? Can I buy a larger ship and only replace one of them to get larger capacity? #computerdummy

Options

Yes, you can mix the different sizes of RAM in the two slots. I have put 2GB and 4GB, 8GB in one slots, and many other combination RAMs in the two slots. You can also leave one slot open and put an 8GB chip in the other slot. I currently have 16GB in my late 2011 MBP and it runs like a beauty.
