MacBook locks up cold than restarts fine.

Hi everybody,

I recently got hold of a Macbook pro 17" (A1261), 2.5 GHz, 4G Ram.

I have a weird problem when starting the machine. When it powers on, the screen looks a bit weird, with missing pixels, and vertical lines, a distorted apple logo.

Than its freezes and reboots automatically and everything is fine. I get a message that it has rebooted and that there's a problem. The file report says a 'kernel' panic.

Apart from the first start, the Mac is running fine. It only freezes when it's 'cold'.

There is one odd thing though, when it goes in to sleep for a long time it doesn't wake up and restarts automatically.

I formatted the hard drive two times, clean install of Maverick, Disk Utility says everything is fine.

Tried the extensive Mac hardware test, no errors.

The battery is dead so I ordered a new one. Can't imagine the problems arise from a dead battery.

Does someone of you have a clue?

Here's the first page of the error report:

hi Michiel, seems like your graphic chip or controller have some issue, in this model is usual.

need reflow for fix the problem temporarily...you can check here or youtube.

i fix exactly same model putting the logic board in the oven.

i suggest to wait first the new battery, and try also a ram at a time and let us know!

Hi Lapo,

Thanks for the reply. Not sure if it is a reflow problem.

Like I mentioned my mbp only locks up one time while booting 'cold'. After that she boots normally and works very good. Even with temperatures up to 70 degr Celsius no freezing or other problems.

I have had a faulty graphics card on my Ibook which I successfully baked in the oven which had a totally other kind of error.

My quest continues.......
