iMac 27" 2009 - Display not working, not even a flicker

I recently purchased an iMac 27", 2009 i5 model. It worked fine for a bit, but now the display will, seemingly, not power on. Or at least nothing appears on the screen.

When I turn it on, I hear the startup chime. After that, nothing. Just a black screen. I connected it to an external display, but I still do not receive so much as a flicker.

Another thing I found a bit odd, after turning it on and hearing the startup chime, if I press the power button, the system immediately shuts off. I know typically you have to hold the button for 10~ seconds before the machine will turn off. But it turns off immediately after pushing it.

Any ideas? I've tried the obvious NVRAM/PRAM reset, SMC reset, and attempted booting into recovery, all to no avail. Not even with an external display. I've also tried Option-booting to a Yosemite USB, but, as I cannot see anything on the display, I cannot tell of it boots up to the selection screen or not.

If you are not getting a signal to the external monitor (first check the external monitor with another Mac to make sure it is working). Remove the glass and tell us what the diagnostic LEDs are telling you. Also, please give us the last four figures of your serial number (located on the bottom of the stand).

I actually have an update. I removed the graphics card, cleaned the pins, and reinserted it. The Mac immediately started up to the grey Apple logo, then shut off. I tried to turn it on again - same result. I tried to Option-boot, made it all the way to the selection menu, then it shut off.

HOWEVER, I removed the GPU entirely and tried to start the iMac, and it started up and stayed on - never shut down. So something with the GPU is causing the system to shut down.
