Why isnt my iPod working?

When I turned my ipod on it told me to plug it in to itunes. So I did and nothing happened. I know that my charging cable works because I tested it on my other ipod. So I tried keeping it plugged in for about an hour just in case it was just dead or something and it was still telling me to plug it in to itunes. Can anybody help me with this?

If your iPod is a 4th generation and not a iPod Touch 4th gen then try to reset by "plug the iPod to the power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet (or plug the iPod into a computer), and reset it by depressing the "menu" and "select" (the center button) until the Apple logo appears.

Chosen Solution

EDIT: in case this is an iPod Touch 4th Generation:

Try this simple thing first: hard reboot your iPod (press & hold Home Button + Power Button together for ~12 seconds. If the iPod has not restarted by then, press once on the Power Button to restart it).

Let us know if it helps. Otherwise, it could be a software error that requires you to wipe and restore your iPod.

Or it may be a hardware problem that is causing this issue.
