Shows grey screen at start up, then turns off.

My MacBook pro froze while I was watching a YouTube video. The screen went black and it began making strange noises. I held the power button to turn it off and restart. It will now show the grey loading screen, but once the bar is full (or near full) the whole computer loses power and turns off.

Can anyone help?

Help us help you. The more complete the description of your problem is (what exact MBP you're using - there are 7 possible versions, what OS you're using -there's a lot of those too, some history what have you tried, and the result e.g. have you tried to safe (shift) boot the machine?) the more useful assistance we can provide, and, the sooner we can provide it..

Oops. Sorry! Here's some more information:

Model no: 1286

OS: whatever is currently the most up-to-date.

That's about all I know.

I have tried 'turning it off'. I've attempted to follow online advice of pressing shift (no response at all), pressing option (brings up HD but once clicked on continues to turn off), insert discs that came with the computer, they get ejected within 15 seconds.

Sorry but Im really not an expert and have no idea what I'm doing.

You don't "press shift" you hold it down through the boot cycle until you see an image on the display and the release it.
